Our Mission

Located on Salt Spring Island, Salt Spring Cat provides care for very young & orphaned kittens found on Salt Spring and nearby Gulf Islands.   We are grateful for the generous support of volunteers, community members, local veterinarians and local pet stores. Working in partnership with other rescue agencies, we take those kittens who require more time and equipment than some rescues are able to manage. Some rescue partners include RestQ Santuary on Galiano island and the  Salt Spring SPCA

Salt Spring Cat provides specialized care for neonatal kittens, veterinary wellness check-ups, FVRCP vaccinations, deworming and  parasite control.   Prior to adoption all kittens are spayed or neutered and micro chipped. As kittens approach 12 weeks of age, potential adopters are carefully screened to ensure the best possible placement for each kitten.

Salt Spring Cat is a small volunteer run rescue, relying on donations and fundraising efforts to fund its programs. The rescue is operated  by Karen Tottman, a long time islander with a passion for cat rescue. She has fostered over 100 cats and kittens with the Salt Spring SPCA and 40 since the formation of Salt Spring Cat in 2021.  The rescue  grateful for the support received from Rest Q Sanctuary on Galiano Island who accept charitable donations earmarked for Salt Spring Cat.  Please check out our Donate  page for ways to help.

The kittens have acclimated to their new home with unbelievable ease…it feels like they have always been here. ......Reuben and Marley are always together and have some pretty good tricks. We have a scratching post and they look like a couple of squirrels casing each on the post. They also love to cuddle and be held. ......The ease of their transition into our home is a testament to your hard work with them during the first 14 weeks of their lives. Thank you for all that you do for these animals. I have been singing your praises to everyone I know! Shannon
We decided to keep her name as Frodo, and she is a wonderful presence in the home. She loves to cuddle almost all the time when she isn’t busy chasing her toys and exploring every singe corner of the house, discovering crevices in furniture and closets that we never knew existed. We love to hear her purr, which she does often and quite loudly, louder than I’ve ever heard from a cat. She is growing quickly, and while it feels too quick we are just happy that we get to be a part of her life and that she is a part of ours. Connor
This kitten and cat rescue is run by a lovely woman who cares deeply for her charges. The lovely creatures lucky enough to be cared for by her are not caged. They are given top notch medical care, lots of love, lots of freedom, and lots of toys. Two of our brood come from this ethical and very special rescue. Alison
